Boston Museum Free Days and Cheap Tickets: The 2026–27 Guide

Free Thursdays, $1 Sundays, resident open houses, EBT discounts and library passes: how to see Boston's big museums without paying $30 a head.

Short answer: the cheapest way into Boston's big museums is to go on the right night. The Gardner and the ICA are free for everyone every Thursday, 5–9 pm. Harvard Art Museums and the Boston Public Library are free every day. And on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, the MFA (Mass. residents), the Gardner, the ICA and the Harvard Museum of Natural History all open their doors for nothing.

Everything else is about carrying the right card: library, EBT or WIC, Bank of America, or a kid under the age cutoff. Below is every free day and discount we could confirm on the museums' own pages in early October 2026. If you just want free stuff of any kind, our 25 free things to do in Boston covers parks, history and the rest.

  • You need an active physical card. eCards don't work, but you can upgrade at any branch with photo ID and proof of Mass. residency.
  • Reserve online, by phone or in person. Limit: one pass per museum every 30 days, one pass per day.
  • Returnable passes are due back by noon the next open day, and e-ticket passes can't be canceled.

Bank of America Museums on Us

Bank of America cardholders get one free general admission on the first full weekend of each month. In Boston, the MFA and the ICA are in. Kids, students and Boston Family Days

Age cutoffs are your friend. Kids are free at the Gardner (17 and under), the ICA (18 and under), the MFA (6 and under) and the Museum of Science (under 3). Boston Family Days get Boston students and family into the MFA and the Gardner free on the first two Sundays of each month.
